In our previous post, we discussed the differences between scholarships and selective entry . While there are differences between the two, preparing for the exams is quite similar. In both cases, your child will be sitting next to hundreds or thousands of students, potentially vying for 1 to 10 available spots. Both types of exams will put students under immense pressure and require the highest level of concentration and academic performance.
If you want your child to sit for either (or both) scholarship exams or selective entry exams, read on as we give you our top 3 tips to prepare your child.
1. Seek Assistance
The first and most important tip is to seek assistance. With the competition for limited spots so high, it’s highly unlikely your child will be awarded a position within one of these top schools without some assistance. Getting expert assistance will help prepare your child, and not just improving them to their academic peak before the examination date. Your coach should also be able to help ease any anxiety and build confidence in your child before the exam. Any child who sits an exam full of confidence will do better than if they were nervous and unsure. This is in fact the most important reason you need assistance – give your child the best chance of succeeding with expert help.
2. Allow plenty of time for preparation
Time is of the essence when it comes to exam preparation. If you know you’re enlisting your child to sit for an exam, get them prepared early – in fact, the earlier the better! At Lynn’s Learning, we prefer to be coaching students at least 6 months prior to the exam date. This allows the child to improve on weaker areas, further extend in other areas, as well as complete ample practice exams, write numerous essays and receive one-on-one coaching time to explain areas of confusion.
3. Interview Techniques
Finally, if your child is shortlisted after sitting a scholarship or selective entry exam, they will be required to attend an interview with the principal. It is crucial that they are well-prepared for this interview. Lynn’s Learning Scholarship/Selective Entry Program also includes interview training for those students who succeed through to the short list. This is an important step – make sure your child is confident talking about themselves, their academic achievements, any extracurricular activities, and so on.
As a final note, try to keep the preparation for these exams as relaxed and fun as possible. While having your child receive a scholarship or be accepted into a selective entry school can greatly help you financially, we must always keeps the child’s needs at heart. It’s important that the students are well-prepared early and get some enjoyment out of their academic studies; Don’t put too much pressure on!
